Lake Symington Community Club
August 2014 Newsletter

From the (new!) President

First, a big thank to Larry D. for his many years of committed service as the Board President. Fortunately, he will be staying on as the V.P.

One of the first orders of new business is to announce that we have contracted with Century Security for a summer trial period for “courtesy patrols” of our community 3-4 random times a night with a marked vehicle. They’ll keep an eye out for suspicious activity, prowlers, potential break-ins, vandalism, etc. They have also provided us with signs that we can post around the neighborhood. We intend to discuss placement at each entry point in our community at the upcoming board meeting. Also available are Resident Emergency Cards with contact information.

This is not in reaction to any past event or specific threat, rather to be proactive in keeping our community as safe as possible and sending a message to would-be thieves that we are a united community interested in staying safe and sound. We really want your input on whether or not to continue the patrols past the summer. Here are some options – what do you think?

  1. Discontinue all patrols, spend our budget on other stuff.
  2. Summers only, limited scope, as our current budget permits.
  3. One pass through the neighborhood every 24 hours, 7 days a week. Note: Dues would go up $10 a year.
  4. Two passes per 24 hours, 7 days a week, $20 a year dues increase.
  5. Three passes per 24 hours, 7 days a week, $30 a year dues increase.
  6. Four passes per 24 hours, 7 days a week, $40 a year dues increase.

Feel free to comment in the space on the flip side of the mailed Newsletter and send it to us in the envelope enclosed with that Newsletter, or email us if you prefer: Dino (President), Larry (Vice President)

During this trial period, you can contact Century 206 679-7902 (soon to be 360 number) for noise complaints, suspicious activity, groups loitering, drinking, making noise etc. As the new President and Dam Safety Officer, I look forward to a great term with the assistance of some really wonderful board members that truly care about our community.

Best Regards,

Dino Fanara

From the Vice President

To the residents of Lake Symington,

I know that this note will not reach all of you, but for those of you reading this, I would like you to take some time very soon and take a walk around the lake; or go to the park; or examine the fish ladder; or sit on the slide and take a ride. Take note of where you live and consider your community responsibility for maintaining it. For most of us, it is too much to even consider cleaning the garage, much less cleaning the weeds from the lake before it is overtaken by them. Who pays attention whether the garbage from the park gets picked up?

Whether you live on the lake or near it, this is your community... where you live...whether you own or rent. I have had the privilege of living on the lake for the last 8 years. My wife and I love it here. We don't know everybody, but we do know our neighbors, one of whom has just sold their home. We will miss them. They were an inspiration and our friends. We are blessed by the changing of the seasons on the lake and how the wildlife around it responds. We have had a terrific summer so far. Take a little time on your next trip and take a ride or a walk around and be grateful for where you live. Bring a trash bag and pick up some litter. Say hello to your neighbors.

Come to the ice cream social!

Larry Dandurand

Ice Cream Social

When: August 23rd, 1 – 3 pm

Where: The park

Who’s invited: All members in divisions 1-4 & 6

Come to the park, enjoy a sundae, meet your board members, neighbors and schoolmates as we wind down summer with a lakeside treat! We are trying to arrange for representatives from the County to be on hand, to answer questions about the lake, the dam, and neighborhood flora and fauna. No word as of this mailing if anyone will be available, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed!

Have a Seat!

We have purchased two lovely green benches for the park from Upbeat Site Furnishings. They are made of sturdy metal mesh and coated with a thick plasticol covering, which keeps the surface cooler to the touch in the summer sun. No final decision has been made as to their placement, if you’d like to weigh in on that decision, please let any of your officers know, or use the Comments section of the form on the mailed Newsletter.

The Kitsap Sun in our Driveways

If you hate it when the Sun throws their circular in your driveway every week, all you have to do is call them. The number is 360 377 3711. Ask for the Circulation Dept. and tell them you want to opt out of A&E delivery (Sometimes it takes two calls to get their attention).

But if you've always assumed that it's nothing but ads, you might want to actually take one out of its bag and look it over once. It's the Arts and Entertainment section of the Sun, there's actually some interesting stuff in there (Who knew?).

Digital Speed Sign

We have arranged for a digital speed sign to be posted on Holly, but we don’t know when. The county has said they will provide us with one as soon as it’s available. It will probably face West for a couple weeks and then East for a few weeks. They will also provide us with a log of traffic counts and vehicle speeds, which we will post on the LSCC web site.

Mind your dog!

When taking Fido for a walk around the lake, please remember to clean up after your dog when she or he “decorates” neighboring lawns.

Lake Weeding

We’re still looking for volunteers to help out with lake weeding and park maintenance this summer and fall. Contact us via email or the form on the mailed Newsletter, if you’re able to lend a hand.

Just a reminder about DUES

There are still a few of us who haven’t paid this year’s home owner dues (check at the bottom of the mailed newsletter for your current status). Note: After Aug 31st, a $10.00 late fee will be assessed. Our dues go toward dam maintenance and inspections as well as landscaping, improvements, upkeep, and the occasional ice cream social.
